The algorithm does the work for you by searching out Web pages that contain the keywords you used to search. It assigns a rank to each page based several factors.
Higher ranked pages appear further up in Google’s search engine results page (SERP), meaning that the best links relating to your search query are theoretically the first ones Google lists. Google Updates Briefly Explained
Following shows the year wise list of updates rolled out by google.
GOOGLE PANDA (2011)
The google panda algorithm was designed to penalize low quality websites that lacked worthwhile content.
The name “Panda” comes from Google engineer Navneet Panda, who developed the technology that made it possible for Google to create and implement the algorithm.
Google penguin took aim at websites that used deceitful SEO practices in order to gain unjustified high rankings.
Penguin penalised the ranking of websites that were spammy, keyword stuffed, had dubious links and were over-optimised.
In January 2015, Google’s John Mueller said that a Penguin penalty can be removed by simply building good links.
GOOGLE TOP HEAVY (2012)
The Google Page Layout Algorithm, also known as the “top-heavy algorithm” was introduced to discourage the use of large, obstructive advertising near the top of the page.
When a fresh Top Heavy Update happens, sites that have removed excessive ads may regain lost rankings.
GOOGLE PIRATE (2012)
These algorithms are indeed doing a good job keeping pirated content out of their search results.
This feature is periodically updated.
GOOGLE EMD (Exact Match Domain) (2012)
A filter Google launched in September 2012 to prevent poor quality sites from ranking
When EMD Update happens, sites that have improved their content may regain good rankings.
New sites with poor content may get caught.
GOOGLE PAYDAY (2013)
The kinds of links the algorithm targeted included at least some “illegal links”.
Links placed on Websites via hacks, malware, and other means employed by only the most aggressive spammers.
This algorithm mainly targets long tail keywords.
That means it mainly looks into the search meaning and not individual words.
GOOGLE PIGEON (2014)
A new algorithm to provide more useful, relevant and accurate local search results that are tied more closely to traditional web search ranking signals.
Anyone with a Google Places account (which is how your business shows up on Google Maps and is tied to your Google+) may either see an increase or decrease in your search results on the map.
GOOGLE MOBILE FRIENDLY UPDATE (2015)
An algorithm that’s designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results.
If your site isn’t easy to use on mobile, Google penalizes it by ranking it lower on its mobile search results pages.
GOOGLE RANK BRAIN (2015)
Rank Brain is an artificial intelligence (AI) program used to help process Google search queries.
If Rank Brain sees a word or phrase it isn’t familiar with, the machine can make a guess as to what words or phrases might have a similar meaning and filter the result accordingly.
It analyses user click-data patterns to determine which previously served results were deemed the best probable answers for those older queries.
“Fred” (Unconfirmed) — March 8, 2017
If you saw a large drop in rankings and organic traffic around the middle of March your site was probably impacted by Fred.
Google Fred is an algorithm update that targets black-hat tactics tied to aggressive monetization.Includes an overload on ads, low-value content, and little added user benefits.
When it comes to algorithms, Google rarely even confirms updates. For search marketers, knowing when these updates happen can help them a lot. It can explain changes in rankings and organic website traffic. This could help to improve search engine optimization.
Checklist to determine the changes
Monitor your search console for changes will be mentioned manually over there
Keep a lookout on your competitors to see if changes have impacted them
Check all your organic traffic as if there is a change, it’s probably bought out by google.
At the end of the day, your main aim should be to make your site better. It’s just common sense, If you think you are doing something that might get you penalised, stop and fix it. If you think your site can be improved, work on that.
